My girls and I decided to drive out to the yellow canola fields for a fun portrait session. However, it did not go as planned. We took a back road in the hope of finding the endless fields of yellow. We saw only green. We could see the fields in the distance but they did not get any closer. Eventually, we drove around a bend and found yellow. We stepped out of the car, and were greeted by an ugly looking dog. My girls scrambled back in the car, and that was the end of that.

As we continued down the country road, my youngest started to feel car sick and asked to go home. Sometimes, these ideas do not work out as we plan. As we approached our street, the sun was starting to set. I wasn’t ready to give up just yet. I decided to visit the river and watch the sunset.

As we played by the river with my girls wearing pretty dresses, my disappointment about the yellow fields faded. A man walking by saw our enjoyment and asked us what we were celebrating. I answered that I was just practising with my camera. But the answer felt wrong. As the sun went down, and the pretty light danced before my eyes, I realized the real answer. We were celebrating life.
